International School of Los Angeles

International School of Los Angeles

The International School of Los Angeles was established in 1978 as a non-profit organization by visionaries of varied cultural backgrounds who felt that the Los Angeles community needed a school which would prepare children for life in an increasingly international environment. Our school is now recognized as one of the most academically challenging private high schools in the United States and continues its long commitment to academic excellence.

At the International School of Los Angeles, we adopt ways of thinking and expression that reflect an appreciation for cultural differences and multiple world views. Diverse groups learn more from each other when exchanging different points of view, introducing new pieces of information, and confronting alternative ideas. Our school’s small and nurturing classes facilitate the sharing of different viewpoints.

Being immersed in a truly multicultural environment helps develop the ability to better

understand one’s own culture – what makes it different, but also in which ways it is similar. Teachers, staff and students come from all over the world, each bringing their own experiences and perspectives. Our students study and live in a world community every day.

The International School of Los Angeles is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) in Geneva, and the French Ministry of Education. Our school also belongs to the Agence pour l’enseignement français à l’étranger (AEFE), Mission laïque française (MLF), and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) networks of schools.

  • PROGRAMS

    Preschool

Preschool through Kindergarten curriculum adapts the French Ministry of Education’s official program to the bicultural and bilingual context. The overall goal is to allow children to grow in a happy environment where they will acquire a healthy desire for knowledge.

    Elementary

Elementary school is a pivotal time in a child’s life. It is the child’s first contact with structured learning. This experience will be a deciding factor as to whether or not a child enjoys school and finds the learning process rewarding. The International School of Los Angeles challenges students and puts them on firm footing for the rest of their educational careers. The curriculum of the elementary school relies on the traditional essentials of reading, writing, and mathematics. Because our children come from many nations, we stress social studies and the concept that we are all citizens of one world. We also emphasize traditional preparation for further education such as work and study habits, neatness, intellectual discipline and respect for the environment in general.

    Middle School

Middle school extends from 6th grade through 8th grade. It is a time when students must put to use the knowledge and skills mastered in elementary school. At this stage, students have moved beyond just learning the basics. They are faced with challenging new concepts and ideas.

The middle school curriculum includes many new subjects. Students take between nine and eleven different courses each year. Ranging from Art to Physics, Math to Languages, the program is demanding and requires serious commitment. Students are exposed to many subjects to achieve a balanced curriculum. Courses are taught through a global approach and subjects extend over several years. Each teacher understands that what is acquired at one grade level is used then as a building block for future classwork.

    High School

At the end of 8th grade, students choose either the “pre-French baccalauréat” or the “international” section for 9th and 10th grade. This represents a choice of either a composite of French and American coursework based on the traditional French Lycée curriculum, to which the necessary elements of the American program are added; or an international curriculum unique to the International School of Los Angeles, aimed at preparing them for the International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme.

At the end of 10th grade, students take the DELF examination (Diplôme d’études en langue française), which certifies their proficiency in the French language.

For 11th and 12th grade, students formally apply to, and enroll in, either the International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme or the French baccalauréat program including the OIB (option internationale du baccalauréat).
