The Brentwood Country Mart has been a beloved community hub since it opened its doors on November 18, 1948. Originally designed by architect Rowland Crawford and built in just six months, the market’s red-board structure and charming layout bring to mind an old-world village marketplace, with shops and stalls centered around a welcoming courtyard. Right from the start, a clever advertising campaign and a touch of Hollywood glamour helped establish the Mart as a fashionable destination. It quickly became a favorite spot for iconic stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Shirley Temple, and Gregory Peck, who not only shopped there but often took part in its charitable events. Over the years, the Mart has maintained its charm, with original establishments like the barber shop, post office, and shoe repair still going strong, alongside classic bites like Reddi Chick's famous rotisserie chicken and fries. Carefully preserved by James S. Rosenfield, the Brentwood Country Mart stands today as a cherished blend of nostalgia and local community, inviting visitors into a cozy, familiar shopping experience unlike any other in LA.
