Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

The seven-story, 300,000 square foot museum features various exhibits focusing on the history and art of movie making.  Permanent Exhibits include: 
 
Stories of Cinema: Stories of Cinema presents the diverse, international, and complex stories of moviemakers and the works they create.
 
Backdrop: An Invisible Art:  In a fitting tribute to the outsized impact that movies can have on our lives, the double height Hurd Gallery features the exhibition Backdrop: An Invisible Art, which spotlights a monumental backdrop—the iconic Mt. Rushmore backing from Hitchcock’s North by Northwest—considering both its artistry and its contested imagery.
 
The Oscars Experience: Step into The Oscars® Experience at the Academy Museum and be transported to the stage at the Dolby Theatre on Oscar night in this simulation. Hear your name called, accept your award, and receive a video capturing your classic Hollywood moment. Visitors experience this with truly immersive audio in Dolby Atmos.
 
The Path to Cinema: Highlights from the Richard Balzer Collection will explore how the cinematic experience we know today evolved from a long tradition of optical amusements and devices of wonder: from shadow play, peepshows, magic lanterns, zoetropes and praxinoscopes to the Cinématographe Lumière, the world’s first successful film projector. Visitors to this exhibition will experience these marvelous inventions first-hand and take in the wonders of a magic lantern show especially created for this exhibition.
 
Programs
The museum offers ongoing education and family programs such as Family Studio Activities, Teen Programs, and School Field Trips throughout the museum, in exhibition galleries, and in the Shirley Temple Education Studio.
 
"Calm Mornings" is a monthly event happening at the museum, where neurodivergent visitors can access certain galleries an hour earlier than the general public when the sound and lights are moderate.
 
Community Day is another monthly program.  In this program, you have a chance to interact with Academy members and Museum staff to learn more about craft of filmmaking.

David Geffen Theater
A grand presentation space for major film events, public programs, live performances, movie premieres, and other special events with the world’s leading filmmakers, the 1,000-seat David Geffen Theater is destined to become an unforgettable part of visitors’ museum experience. 
 
Ted Mann Theater
The Ted Mann Theater, located in the Saban Building, serves as the museum’s most utilized theater. The 288-seat theater offers curated screenings and special programs on a daily basis that include Oscar-winning films, family films, and rare and historical films, all presented in an intimate, elegant, art house setting. 
 
Dining
Fanny’s, the museum’s restaurant and café, was brought to life by restaurateurs Bill Chait and Carl Schuster, with support from philanthropist Wendy Stark. Named after Fanny Brice—the legendary movie, vaudeville, theater, and radio star portrayed by Barbra Streisand in her Oscar®-winning role in Funny Girl (1968)—the striking two-story, 10,000-square-foot space, conceptualized by the late architect Osvaldo Maiozzi, features a chef-designed open kitchen, elegant bar, and captain-based service style that nods to a bygone era, and offers diners cuisine and cocktails by Chef Raphael Francois and Julian Cox. 
 
Store
Visit the Academy Museum Store for an exclusive selection of cinematic treasures for all ages. Featuring merchandise designed and produced by Academy Members and Los Angeles- and California-based artists, designers, and creatives, shoppers can find Oscars memorabilia, clothing, furniture, accessories, vinyl records, items for the office and home, posters, maps, illustrations, toys, games, and other movie-related collectibles. The Academy Museum Store also offers one of the most comprehensive collections of cinema books and catalogues in Los Angeles.

Protocols are in place requiring proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken up to 72 hours prior to arrival as of November 4, 2021.  Advance reservations must be made online.
